Sporting success...again!

Posted by Kyle Grabowski on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 / 0 Comments

We’ve done it again! Cameron Shield is officially ours after Selwyn beat Knox in Squash on Monday night. Well done to everyone that has taken part in the sporting events against Knox this year; your hard work and dedication has finally paid off!

Selwynites now turn their heads to Nevill Cup as our finest band will clash against the Knoxies at Band Hop next Thursday night in the winner-take-all event. We are currently tied with Knox in cultural points, and the winner of Thursday’s event will take the trophy home. Good luck to those who are playing, we will be proud of you no matter what!

Work hard, play harder

The holidays have ended and all, well most, are back at Selwyn with a smile on their face, ready to finish the semester and the university year with good grades, great friendships and amazing memories. For some, however, the thought of the exams that await us have snapped us straight into work mode, and the start of the semester will be littered with many library visits and late night study sessions.

Not to worry, Selwyn offers many activities this side of the second semester to entertain the residents during well deserved study breaks. The infamous Quiz Night takes place this week, and the glamorous 21sters Ball is due to take place next Saturday night. We also match our finest dancers and musicians against the Knoxies in a clash for Nevill Cup, and the Cam events to take place include soccer, squash and hockey.

With the end of the year approaching fast, the time has come to select a new Committee to run the SCSA and all the events that make Selwyn as amazing as it is. Election Week will commence in a few weeks, with Election Day taking place soon afterwards. Good luck to all those that try out for a position on the Committee! It can be tough at times, but the rewards and satisfaction the roles supply are irreplaceable.

Healthy Competition

32-12, the first ever recorded score at Forsyth Barr Stadium, commemorates Selwyn’s glorious victory over Knox College in the rugby last week. Knox played hard and they played well, but at the end of the day it was our boys in the maroon and gold that out-played their adversaries at the brand new stadium.

A quick transition from the sports field to the cultural domain saw the Selwyn Choir beat Knox as part of the struggle for the Nevill Cup. Both Small and Big Choirs dominated the Knoxies with their incredibly harmonious voices, and Selwyn is extremely proud of their achievements.

Friday saw the arrival of College House, marking the start of our annual exchange with the UC students. A welcoming Mihi took place before moving straight ahead into the competition, which involved rugby, soccer, netball, debating, choir, theatresports and instrumental.

The weekend would have been a complete success, had College House not had to leave early due to forecasted weather conditions. This meant that the band competition could not take place at Monkey Bar on Saturday night, but Selwyn still paid a visit to the infamous bar never-the-less. We are, however, truly grateful to have hosted College House this year, and the friendships made will undoubtedly last for a long time to come.

Selwyn Knox Rugby

There is a buzz in the air as everyone awaits Friday’s rugby match against Knox at the Forsyth Barr Stadium. The match against Knox College is the official opening game of the new stadium, which will be seeing lots of action during the World Cup season.

The boys have been working hard and will be proud to don the maroon and gold Selwyn jerseys when they run onto the field. Last year saw Selwyn beat Knox 27-0, but some new talent on the Knoxie front promises that Friday’s game will be one not to be missed! Watch this space…

Bring On Semester Two!

The second semester is under way and Re-O has just ended with a bang! And what a Re O-week it has been! Yes, students still had class, but that didn’t stop them from coming together and having fun at various events and activities planned for them throughout the week.

The second semester promises many great events, namely the major Cam Shield matches such as Rugby, Hockey, Billiards and Netball, and Neville Cup events such as Dance, Choir and Open Drama. The usual Selwyn events coming up include Floor Missions, The Great Annual Sock-Off and Secret Admirer’s Week.

This year Selwyn’s rugby team is fortunate enough to take part in the first official match played on the soil of the new Forsyth Barr Stadium, and with the Rugby World Cup approaching fast, we are hoping to have the Selwyn Ballet feature in some promotional events as well. All in all, semester two is jam packed with fun and excitement, so make sure you watch this space to hear about what’s happening in and around the College.

Goodbye for now

Selwyn College this week has been extremely quiet. Most students have gone home now that the exam period has come to an end, leaving behind the Med students who still have class and the few stragglers who love the College too much to leave. It is a weird experience walking to my room on the once buzzing and ecstatic TFW (Top Floor Whitehead) without running into a single person who wants to chat or share a friendly “hello”. I don’t let it bother me too much, for tomorrow I’m off home for two weeks, and when I return, I know that the College will be alive and full energy once more.

Exam time...

Posted by Kyle Grabowski on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 / 0 Comments

Its exam time, and these days not a sound is heard within the College walls. Whether the silence is due to the fact that all the Health Sci’s have invaded the Central Library (thus leaving half the College behind back at Selwyn), or because the BCom, Psychology, BSci and PE students have populated the Study Centre on Selwyn grounds, I will never know. It could, however, be due to the fact that all those lucky Law kids have gone home already, no exams to worry about this semester, and attempting to get five weeks of holiday under their belts!

Today was the official start of the exam period, so to all those who have exams coming up in the following few weeks, I wish you the very best of luck. Before you know it the exams will be over and it will be time to enjoy a well deserved holiday! Take care and good luck! :)
